PIE challenge Start up event

14th May 2017

As part of the next Primary Inspiration through Enterprise (PIE) challenge, year 5 Red class were one of only two schools invited to attend Newcastle Startup Week Festival on Monday 15th May. Significantly, the event took place at Stephenson’s Boiler House, famous for being the world’s first purpose-built locomotive factory, which powered the railway industry and industrial revolution in the early 19th century.

Newcastle Startup Week festival was designed to inspire and encourage more local people to start and grow their own businesses and attract others from outside the region who might like to relocate, invest or do business in the North-East. Several successful, Newcastle entrepreneurs made inspiring speeches about enterprise and how a good idea and lots of hard work, can reap great rewards!

Our two project managers – Tiam and Charlie – attended the event, along with Mrs Young. Both children enjoyed hearing all the inspirational speeches and after making lots of notes, they had quite a few ideas to take back for our enterprise challenge! Our school received a special mention by Ammar Mirza CBE, where he conveyed how impressed he is with our commitment and enthusiasm for the challenge and expressed his belief in encouraging and nurturing the children of today to be the futures leaders in business enterprise.

“I really enjoyed hearing all the speakers talk about how they became successful. I particularly liked Brad Burton, who wrote the books. He was really funny and I know it takes lots of hard work to become an entrepreneur” explained Charlie.

“I am excited to get started with our challenge now. I have lots of ideas and I know we can win!” stated Tiam.

We feel very privileged to have been invited to this event and we know that the children in year 5 Red class (particularly Tiam and Charlie) have really benefitted from this opportunity. We wish year 5 red class the best of luck in the challenge and we look forward to hearing how they get on in the next phase of the challenge.
