School of Sanctuary Award

7th February 2017

School of Sanctuary award

At KPPS, we are committed to being a safe and welcoming place for those seeking sanctuary. This could be people whose lives were in danger in their own country, who have troubles at home or are just looking for a space of safety. A School of Sanctuary is a school that helps its students, staff and wider community understand what it means to be seeking sanctuary and to extend a welcome to everyone as equal, valued members of the school community. At KPPS, we are proud to be a place of safety and inclusion for all.

On Tuesday 7th February, we had two visitors from the Schools of Sanctuary initiative come in to school to talk to us all about what it means to seek sanctuary. We were privileged to have Ali (a refugee who sought asylum in the UK) talk to us about his experiences of being a refugee and why the School of Sanctuary Initiative is so important. He explained to the children what it means to be seeking sanctuary and they asked some very pertinent and important questions about ways that they can help to male our school safer.

In order to become an official School of Sanctuary, there are three principles that we must cover;

  1.        Learn about what it means to be seeking sanctuary.
  2.        Take positive action to embed concepts of welcome, safety and inclusion within school and the wider community.
  3.        Share our vision and achievements – be proud!

We will keep you updated with our progress in achieving this award.
