Year 5 Red class took part in the BIG PIE Friday Challenge. PIE (Primary Inspiration through Enterprise), aims to help bring education to life through effective engagement with employers and to provide an introduction to the World of Work (WoW).
To help us with the challenge, Officer Edward from the local Army Corps joined us as our ‘Pioneer’, who oversaw the competition and to help the pupils during this process. We took part in two challenges, competing against a number of other schools across Newcastle for a place in the next stage of the competition.
Our first challenge, ‘The Flying Glider Challenge’, was an engineering challenge which saw the pupils constructing their own glider and trying to enable it to travel the furthest distance possible. Each child recorded their own distance and then we recorded our combined distance. This was conducted both inside and outside. We have a chance of winning either the individual or combined group awards. Fingers crossed!
Our second challenge, ‘The Code Combat Challenge’, saw the pupils coding their way through each level of this coding game, working systematically to code and debug their character to ensure that they collected as many gems as possible along the way. After 40 minutes, they recorded their level. The winner will be the pupil who reached the highest level in this time.
We really enjoyed this challenge and realised that we have lots of skills that are not just maths or literacy based! We really hope we get through to the next round, so that we can enjoy the next challenge with the help of Officer Edward.
